US solar industry eyes 50 GW of manufacturing capacity by 2030

Following the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, an energized solar industry is aiming high and envisioning a future in which the United States has a robust domestic energy supply chain. SEIA's new roadmap charts a path to achieving this goal, with a target of 50 GW of annual solar manufacturing capacity by 2030.

The United States has been plagued by numerous pressures threatening the supply of solar modules imported from overseas. With decarbonization and climate goals under threat due to this shortage, the country is now turning to boosting domestic manufacturing to power the energy transition. “Greatly expanding US PV manufacturing could mitigate global supply chain challenges and lead to tremendous benefits for the climate as well as for US workers, employers and the economy,” said the Department of Energy (DoE). It concluded in a study that US production could reach 10 GW in two years, 15 GW in three years, and 25 GW in five years on its path to 50 GW of annual production.

Astronergy designing holistic micro-grid system to power Chinese industrial park

Chinese module manufacturer Astronergy has designed a solar PV, battery storage and building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) micro-grid system for the Haining Zhengtai Industrial Park. Located between the eastern Chinese cities of Hangzhou and Jiaxing, the park is home to high-end equipment manufacturing and advanced information technology companies.

Astronergy said industrial parks’ demand for energy security is “booming” amid a climate of rising costs and needs. Its solution has been to create a 5.9MW distributed solar power system built within the factory alongside a DC coupling micro-grid system. The micro-grid integrates an 8.83kW BIPV PV hut, a 50kW BIPV PV parking shed, a 4.5kW PV road and ribbon-shaped PV corridor, a 35kW PV lab and a 5kW vertical axis wind turbine. Astronergy said developing low-carbon and zero-carbon buildings is important for energy conservation, emission reduction and environmental protection. “Every year, there are about 4 billion square meters of housing area being constructed, among which 5% uses BIPV,” the company claimed, adding the BIPV market will soon be worth RMB100 billion (US$14.6 billion).

Canadian Solar raises 2022 revenue guidance as module shipments jump

Canadian Solar has raised its 2022 revenue guidance as it progresses with efforts to ramp up its PV manufacturing capacity, following a hike in module shipments in the second quarter. The company shipped 5,060MW of solar modules during Q2 2022, representing a 37% increase year-on-year, with the top five markets ranked by shipments being China, the US, Spain, Brazil and Germany.

Revenues for the quarter were above prior guidance, increasing 62% year-on-year to US$2.31 billion and driven by higher shipment volumes and average selling prices, solar project sales and growth in the company’s battery storage solutions business. CSI Solar, the company’s manufacturing division, benefited from higher-than-expected volumes and pricing, according to Yan Zhuang, president at CSI Solar. “Demand from our end markets has been incredibly strong despite the increase in pricing,” he said during a conference call with investors. Driven by higher module pricing, Canadian Solar has raised its 2022 revenue forecast to US$7.5 – 8 billion, up on previous guidance of US$7 – 7.5 billion.
